Calm of the Tiger.

It's always nice to see colors that mosaics aren't often made with. For this beautiful tiger, James uses orange and brown beautifully. It's only natural, as it's a tiger, but it's still nice to see uncommon color combos well executed.

Black Rock Shooter

Chris Rozek (ChrisR18t) made this nifty light-up mosaic that was displayed at BrickWorld.  He says it weighs 21 pounds and contains over 7300 bricks.

I Spy a Mosaic

I finally "built" something, and Bruce has prodded me into posting it.  I guess it is a mosaic -- a scatter mosaic, although that is a bit of a misnomer, because everything is very carefully placed.

My kids have been getting into the I Spy books, where you have to look for objects mentioned in a corresponding poem.  A lot of the illustrations are photographs of a multitude of scattered objects.  One of my favorites has the objects arranged in the shape of a bird.  I thought it'd be fun to do something similar in LEGO for my kids.

I Spy... a Pie! (see description for clues)

So then I had to come up with the rhyming verses, too:

I spy a pie, a monster's green legs,
Six butterflies and a bird that lays eggs.
A turtle, a clam, seven long snakes,
Four forks, three knives, and a pan to bake cakes.

I spy three jewels, a mirror, a purse,
An otoscope and thermometer made for a nurse;
Two crocodile tails and an alien's head,
Three frogs playing leapfrog and a bug that is red.

I spy a TV, four stars, and four hearts,
A crosswalk, a 60, and four arms hacked in parts;
Three kinds of fruit, a pan in the sun,
A metal detector, a hat, and two kinds of gun.

I spy a paw print, two flags, and two balls,
A TV and two walkies for making some calls;
A flask, a suitcase, and eleven flowers,
And if you're like my kids...
You'll be here for hours.

LEGO in the Tube

Sorry to be so neglectful to this blog.  It is looking like I will be working full-time all next year, too, so I suppose it won't be the last time it happens.  But for now, here is a link with pictures showing 5 Tube maps made with LEGO, built to celebrate 150 years of the London Underground:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-22882678

Calgary Expo Mosaics

Just a quick post tonight, I've been a bit busy building lately, and wanted to get these up before Katie has to, and I feel guilty about it. So, without further delay, a few of the pieces I've built for the 2013 Calgary Expo.

 First up, added the Hermes Conrad to make the "Futurama Triptych", with Brickwares Jr Jr providing scale, and rocking the Buzz Lightyear Hoodie.

 Next up is a Malcom Reynolds mosaic, signed by Nathan Fillion. "I Aim To Misbehave."

Nathan Fillion poses with the piece, to the cheers from the autograph line.

And finally, A Game of Thrones Lannister Crest. This one is signed by Peter Dinklage. It simply reads "To Dave: Brilliant".

Cobblestone Technique!

So here is a wonderful technique if you, like us, have stood at the PaB and wondered what would anyone do with thousands of 1x1 vertical clips...

And as we are often looking for ways of incorporating mosaics into mocs, this cobblestone pattern by
Tommy M. (Eklund!) is perfect.

We'd love to see people incorporate this kind of detail throughout their winding castle streets, or steampunk villas. :)

Mosaics Roundup -- April 21 edition

A few mosaics I've come across recently:

Bruce found this lovely painting, called "Plum blossom in early spring", by Rack Haung (rack911).

Rack also has this cute little snake in honor of the Year of the Snake:

Paul Toxopeus made portraits of the new king and queen of the Netherlands, King Willem Alexander and queen Maxima.

And Arthur Gugick (torgugick) made a decorated tile mosaic of John Lennon, which contains about 4000 tiles:

Arthur also posted this LEGO version of The Scream back in January, which I somehow managed to forget to post at the time:
