Mosaic Portraits

Mariann Asanuma (Model Gal) recently completed her first mosaic portrait of a real person.  At the size of 1 square foot, it's pretty small, but still containing lots of detail:

She wrote a lot about the design process on her Model Building Secrets blog.

Dave Shaddix also recently completed a mosaic of a person, which is, as he describes it, "A 20" x 20" mosaic commissioned by a very loving grandmother to commemorate her grandson's senior year of high school and amazing last season!"

This mosaic is a bit more stylized, but still gives me a great impression of a football player in action.

Level 42

Maarten Steurbaut (whose parrot mosaic we previously featured) recently posted a finished mosaic of his favorite band, Level 42:

He has a very extensive description of how he made this mosaic on his webpage, along with other LEGO mosaics and ministeck mosaics.

Self-Portrait

Adam (AceBricks) was inspired by Blake Baer's gray-scale mosaic, and decided to make his own, using a SNOT (studs not on top) technique.

I particularly like the eye and eyebrow in the center of the mosaic.  They have a very clean and crisp line that really makes for a nice focal point.

Forever Enshrined Behind Some Old Glass Pane

Barney Main (SlyOwl) made this scene for an entry in an Iron Builder competition. For the contest he was required to use the yellow triangle piece in each creation. The triangles made for very nice medals, but for me the highlight of the MOC was the mosaic portrait.

Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane

It uses bricks and plates heading in several directions in order to give the impression of a soldier in an old, tattered photograph. All together it makes for a rather poignant scene.

While on the topic of Barney, I should mention that he was featured extensively in the latest LEGO Ideas Book. I received this book for Christmas, and it is packed with wonderful models from several people I have "met" in the online LEGO community. It also includes an extensive mosaic section, which I will try to cover in a future post.
